A photo of six men and a large ore cart at the entrance to the Main Tunnel. At the extreme right is Sherman Day, surveyor and then mine superintendent during the 1860's. During the early development days of the New Almaden mines, most of the ore was brought from the depths of Mine Hill through this tunnel which opened on Deep Gulch. In this early day picture, miners are emerging with a full load of cinnabar for the sorting shed. ENTRANCE TO THE MAIN TUNNEL. Miners were shown emerging from the entrance to the Main Tunnel with a full load of cinnabar. The tunnel was added to speed the removal of ore from the Indian cave. It was 10 feet wide, seven feet high and included a double track narrow gauge railroad for the large ore cars. At the far right is Sherman Day, surveyor and later mine superintendent. Day resigned, effective October 31, 1864, with this statement ". with the intended reduction of my salary to $300 per month after 1st Nov. next, I certainly shall not remain at that salary, and therefore herewith tender my resignation". Sherman Day was originally from Pennsylvania where in 1838 he published Historical Collections of the State of Pennsylvania. Day was also the designer of the rail system on Mine Hill and installed the incline railroad that substantially reduced the time and cost of transporting ore to the Hacienda.
